When traveling in Hungary, it’s important to remember that a digital vignette is required for using the toll roads in the country. Adhesive vignettes are no longer used, so there’s no need to worry about sticking anything to your windshield. If you’re driving a car, camper, or motorcycle weighing less than 3.5 tons, you can conveniently purchase an e-vignette online from the official website. 

There are different options available for digital vignette periods, including 1-day, 10-day, 1-month, or 12-month vignettes, making it easy to choose the one that best fits your travel plans.

Monthly vignette for Hungary - how does it work?

The e-vignette is linked to the license plate of the vehicle. When you buy a vignette online, your registration number will be added to a database. Cameras on the Hungarian motorways and expressways will capture your license plate and compare it with the database system in the country. If your digital vignette is registered, it will automatically be recognized.

The monthly Hungarian motorway vignette is valid  for 1 month from the selected start date until the end of the same day in the following month. 

If you plan to stay in Hungary for more than 10 days, you must purchase the vignette for one month; otherwise, you can choose a shorter validity period.

Who and when needs the 1-month vignette for Hungary?

Every vehicle weighing up to 3.5 tons must have a valid e-vignette when entering the toll road network in Hungary. The e-vignette should be purchased before entering the toll road section of the motorways. The monthly sticker is valid from the start date until midnight of the same day of the following month. If the expiry month doesn’t have the same date, it’s valid until 00:00 on the last day of the month.

Passenger car with a maximum permissible laden weight of up to 3.5 tonnes and carrying a maximum of 7 passengers.

Can I drive in Hungary without a vignette?

Yes, it’s possible to transfer the e-vignette to a different vehicle registration number if the vehicle owner changes. If the vehicle is written off or stolen, the e-vignette can be transferred to another vehicle in the same vehicle category. Note: only monthly and annual stickers can be transferred.

How long will I not be fined, what should I do if I drive onto a motorway by mistake?

If you mistakenly drive onto the toll road network, you have a maximum of 60 minutes from entry to purchase your vignette.
