Current traffic situation with toll roads in Hungary

In Hungary, roads are classified as controlled-access highways (including motorways and expressways), main roads, and side roads. The country has a well-developed highway network, with a total toll-road length of 1,855 km as of 2022. The speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on expressways.
Different types of vignettes are available for toll road use in Hungary:

1. Daily (1-day) vignette: Valid for the indicated calendar day if purchased in advance, or from the time of purchase until midnight if purchased on the same day.
2. Weekly (10-day) vignette: Valid for 10 consecutive calendar days.
3. Monthly vignette: Valid from the start date until midnight of the same day of the following month, or until midnight on the last day of the month if the expiry month doesn’t have the same date.
4. Annual e-vignette: Valid from the first day of the year until 31 January of the following year.

What penalties do I face without an e-vignette?

When driving on a toll road in Hungary, you must purchase an e-vignette within 60 minutes. If caught without one or with falsified information, you’ll have to pay a fine. The fine increases if not paid within 60 days. Additionally, for each day without a valid vignette, you’ll receive a separate payment request. Always double-check the vehicle category to avoid fines.

How long can you drive in Hungary without a vignette?

You need to buy the e-vignette before entering the expressway. However, you have 60 minutes from entering to purchase permission to use the road.
